A green grape which is not used in the traditional wine countries, but is perfectly designed for a cold climate zone like Denmark. When we, Yulia and Christopher, walk the fields of Danish vineyards, it&#8217;s the grape we usually encounter. In fact, more than 60% of Danish wine production today is with the Solaris grape.<br><br>In this post, in addition to this grape, you can meet the other Danish grapes for wine that the vineyards grow, whether it&#8217;s for red wine, white wine, fortified wine or sparkling wine. Since the 1990s, in Denmark we&#8217;ve spent years testing all kinds of grape varieties, but today there are a handful that have proven that they thrive in the colder climates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green and blue grape varieties for Danish wine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Achieving success in wine production in Denmark is highly dependent on both the location of the vineyard and the choice of grape types. For example, the unusually long and dry summer weather in 2018 contributed significantly to an excellent wine year. Solaris is the leading green grape variety, followed by varieties such as Orion and Zala&#8217;s Pearl, while Rondo dominates among the blue grape varieties, with Leon Millot and Regent also being significant.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/swedishwine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/solaris-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3200\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Solaris grape on a hot summer day in Denmark<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is an overview of some of the main green and blue grape varieties used in Denmark for the production of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/swedishwine.com\/en\/\">Danish wine<\/a> <\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Green grape varieties for Danish wine:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Solaris: Known for early ripening and resistance to fungal attack.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orion: Similar to M\u00fcller-Thurgau but with higher sugar content.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zala&#8217;s Pearl: Used in Hungary for sparkling wines, frost resistant.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ortega: Early ripening with high sugar content and low acidity.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muscaris: Known for its unique flavor profile, it is also well suited to the Danish climate.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chardonnay: An exotic grape like Pinot Noir, but one that up-and-coming players like Brut de M\u00f8n are using successfully for their sparkling wines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blue grape varieties for Danish wine:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rondo: The most planted blue grape variety in Denmark. It is a cross between the Zarya Severa and the Austrian St. Laurent. Ripens early and gives a lot of color to the wine.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leon Millot: The second most planted blue grape, which is the preferred grape in <a href=\"https:\/\/swedishwine.com\/en\/skaersoegaard-wine\/\">Sk\u00e6rs\u00f8gaard Wine&#8217;s<\/a> red wines. A cross between Goldriesling from Alsace and the American Millardet et de Grasset. Resistant to vine diseases, winter hardy.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regent: A cross between Chambourcin and Silvaner. Typically used to mix with Rondo. Resistant to gray mold, late ripening.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cabernet Cortis: A cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Solaris. Early ripening, high resistance to grapevine mildew.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pinot Noir: yes, you read that right. Although better suited to Burgundy, wineries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/swedishwine.com\/en\/vesterhave-winery\/\"> <strong>Vesterhave Ving\u00e5rd<\/strong> <\/a> and By Stokkebye have succeeded in making fantastic red wines with this grape. Klitgaard Vin makes sparkling wines with the grape, and the warmer weather ahead will make it more popular.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cabernet Cantor: Another grape that is being experimented with e.g. at<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/swedishwine.com\/en\/vejrhoej-vingaard\/\">Vejrh\u00f8j Winery<\/a> <\/strong>. Suitable for ros\u00e9 and the taste of Danish summer.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boleo: Reminiscent of Rondo and on the rise in Danish wineries.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Castel: A cross between the French Cinsault and Vitis. Typically used for blended wines, high tannin content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The green grape varieties for wine production in Denmark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Denmark is home to several green grape varieties that are well suited to the cooler climate. Solaris, a prominent variety, is known for its early ripening and resistance to fungal diseases, making it ideal for the Danish climate. Orion, another popular green variety, is prized for its high sugar content and ability to develop a full-bodied flavor profile. Solaris is also notable for its resistance to fungal diseases, a trait that reduces the need for chemical treatment. These qualities make Solaris a favorite among Danish winegrowers, and it is used extensively in the production of aromatic, fruity white wines and sparkling wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grape varieties in Denmark going forward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve been testing and experimenting for the first 20 years of Danish wine, and we&#8217;ll continue to do so. Of the 1,300 grape varieties found globally, Danish wineries have tested a larger number of them.
